A premium vacation amid lush landscapes
Umbria holds within its borders some of Italy’s most decadent splendors – from wine of rare varietals to the culinary equivalent of diamonds: truffles. Despite these sought-after indulgences, Umbria is a region that has often been overshadowed by its more popular neighbors. To the north sits Tuscany, with its cypress-dotted hills, Chianti wines and Renaissance art. To the southwest, the region of Lazio lures visitors to the Eternal City, Rome. Umbria’s lack of tourist saturation allows one to experience more fully the subtleties of beauty.
Umbria possesses its own enchanted qualities. Dominated with picturesque forests and rolling valleys whose colors change with the seasons, Umbria has been dubbed Italy’s “green heart.” It is where small roads lead to age-old, hilltop villages. It is where to one can revel in the spiritual sites of St. Francis in Assisi, be enchanted by Todi’s fairy-tale splendor, get lost in the Chiana Valley’s tranquil beauty, explore Orvieto where the Etruscans settled, experience the slow pace of life in Spoleto, and discover the artistic treasures in Perugia. One can also satisfy a sweet tooth there as it is home to one of the most famous Italian confectionaries – Perugina, makers of Baci, Italian chocolate kisses. Your love affair will begin after your first bite.
You can search for prized white and black truffles in the foothills with an experienced truffle hunter and his skilled dog to unearth some of these treasures. You can sip one of the most tannic red wine in the world, Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG. It is believed that the grape was originally introduced to the region in the 9thcentury by Franciscan monks. Sagrantino grapes are indigenous to the Umbrian towns of Montefalco and Bevagna. There are only about 250 acres dedicated to its production, making It one of the most exclusive grapes. Local prosciutto, sausages, pasta, extra virgin olive oil and cow and sheep cheeses dazzle food enthusiasts. Meals can be savored at one of the numerous agriturismi, family-run farms, or at one of the local trattorias in town.
After a day in the outdoors traversing the region’s lush landscapes, find your inner royalty as you settle into a true Umbrian castle. A new experience or revelation awaits around every corner. Once you have indulged in Umbria, you may never want to leave.
